This case study details the cloud migration of the Michigan Health Information Network Shared Services (MiHIN), the designated entity for health information exchange in Michigan. MiHIN faced challenges with its legacy on-premises servers, which limited scalability and created security vulnerabilities. To address these issues, MiHIN partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Cloudticity to transition to a cloud-native infrastructure. The migration involved deploying Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances and Amazon Relational Database (RDS), along with implementing secure API tools to mitigate VPN-related barriers. The transformation has allowed MiHIN to focus on patient-centric innovation and improve clinical outcomes while ensuring compliance with HIPAA standards.
