This case study documents Hitachi Rail's integration of CMMI Performance Solutions into their continuous improvement journey, which began in 2008. The primary objective of this initiative is to enhance efficiency, customer satisfaction, and sustainable growth. The study outlines how Hitachi Rail utilized CMMI's appraisal methodology to improve governance across various lines of business, ensure compliance with quality and safety standards, and meet customer expectations. Key performance indicators (KPIs) were established to monitor defect density, design specification rejections, software defects, and manufacturing loss costs. The results indicate a reduction in defect density from 17.17% to 15.73% and a decrease in manufacturing loss costs from 0.8% to 0.6%. The case study emphasizes the importance of a process-oriented approach and the adoption of the EITVOX model for effective communication and understanding of processes. Overall, the findings illustrate how CMMI has facilitated Hitachi Rail's capability to deliver quality products and services while achieving their business goals.
