Student Perspectives on Generative AI in Computing Education

This research report examines the interaction and perceptions of 371 U.S. college students in computing courses regarding generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools. The study reveals that a significant majority, 76%, have engaged with GenAI, with popular tools including ChatGPT and Google Bard. The report highlights that 47% of students use GenAI for school-related tasks, with a notable financial commitment to these tools. The findings indicate that students utilize GenAI for various purposes, including assignment comprehension and error explanation. Despite a general perception of accuracy, students are less likely to view these tools as helpful, suggesting that effectiveness may depend on individual skill levels. The report also addresses concerns about academic integrity, noting that students exhibit principled approaches when using GenAI, such as scrutinizing outputs. Additionally, it discusses the evolving nature of curricula to incorporate GenAI tools and the differing concerns about job displacement among various age groups, illustrating a generational divide in perceptions of GenAI's impact on employment.
