This case study details Wisk Aero's migration of high performance computing (HPC) simulations to Amazon Web Services (AWS) to enhance job runtime and operational efficiency. Wisk Aero, an advanced air mobility company, utilizes computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to analyze in-flight airflow for their eVTOL aircraft designs. The document outlines the challenges faced with on-premises HPC infrastructure, including high costs and management complexities. To address these issues, Wisk Aero partnered with Converge Technology Solutions and the AWS HPC team to transition to Amazon EC2, which provides scalable compute capacity. The pilot environment established on AWS allowed Wisk Aero to benchmark performance and validate the financial model for cloud usage. The transition resulted in significant performance improvements, enabling Wisk Aero to run simulations more efficiently and economically. The case study highlights the benefits of cloud elasticity and the successful implementation of AWS solutions in supporting innovative aerospace technologies.
