Kentucky State University Network Infrastructure Case Study

This case study details the modernization of Kentucky State University's (KSU) aging fiber optic network infrastructure. KSU, a historically black land grant institution, faced significant challenges due to its over 20-year-old network, which lacked redundancy and could not support the increasing demand for connectivity. The Vice President of Information Technology, Dr. Wendy Dixie, emphasized the necessity for a resilient network to ensure 99.99% availability. To address these issues, KSU partnered with C1 to upgrade to single mode fiber, establish campus hub locations, and refresh the network infrastructure. The project resulted in a 3900% increase in Wi-Fi speed, installation of 800 wireless access points, and upgrades to 13 campus buildings. The collaboration led to improved network access, increased coverage, and enhanced student satisfaction, enabling KSU to focus on its strategic goals, including launching an online program. The project was completed two months ahead of schedule, marking a significant advancement in KSU's technological capabilities.
