Norwalk's Public Safety and Digital Equity Transformation

This case study outlines the efforts of the City of Norwalk to enhance public safety and promote digital equity through innovative technology solutions. Faced with rising concerns about crime in local parks, City Manager Jesus Gomez initiated a project aimed at not only reducing crime but also creating smarter and more inclusive public spaces. Collaborating with C1, the city implemented a system of Verkada smart cameras, Nokia 5G routers, and Cisco Meraki access points across 12 parks. This technology deployment transformed these parks into secure and connected community hubs. The results were significant: crime rates decreased, evidence-based policing improved, and students from underserved households gained access to free Wi-Fi in local parks, enabling them to complete homework and access essential services. The project has been recognized federally and serves as a model for other cities facing similar challenges, demonstrating how effective leadership and technology can lead to substantial community benefits.
