This case study details the implementation of a pumped liquid CO2 secondary refrigeration system utilizing ammonia for a cold storage warehouse operated by Metro Inc., a major player in the food and pharmaceutical sectors in Québec and Ontario. The project aimed to enhance the efficiency of the cold storage distribution warehouse, which supports growing retail operations while adhering to environmental standards. The solution involved a dual-temperature low-charge ammonia refrigeration system that eliminates the need for HFC refrigerants. The Vilter package, which includes a plate and frame chiller and four Vilter screw compressors, offers a compact design that simplifies installation and reduces the footprint. The dual slide valve technology enhances part load performance, thereby saving energy and costs. The system is designed to minimize ammonia usage on site, improving safety and reducing certification costs. Additionally, the Vilter compressors are noted for their durability and low maintenance requirements, contributing to long-term operational efficiency.
