This case study details the challenges faced by the Department of Energy (DOE) regarding its optical transport infrastructure, which struggled with increasing demands for bandwidth, resiliency, and scalability. The existing legacy systems were limited in their capabilities, leading to operational complexities that hindered the support of growing data movement requirements and future encryption needs. To address these issues, DOE collaborated with Copper River and Nokia Federal to implement a modernized optical transport solution. This new architecture focused on simplicity and flexibility while ensuring lifecycle longevity. The phased approach allowed for the coexistence with existing systems, thereby minimizing operational risks during migration. The resulting architecture improved bandwidth availability, operational clarity, and scalability, positioning the infrastructure for future enhancements. Additionally, the solution utilized advanced optical transport technologies, ensuring long-term adaptability to meet evolving mission requirements.
