This case study details the network security modernization project undertaken by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in collaboration with Copper River IT. The primary challenge faced was the outdated firewall and security infrastructure, which could not meet the demands of the university's expanding data environment. The solution involved deploying Palo Alto Networks' Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFW) and implementing centralized management through Palo Alto Networks Panorama. Key components of the solution included advanced threat prevention, URL filtering, and intrusion detection capabilities. The deployment process was structured and collaborative, involving a full network security audit, policy migration, and hands-on training for UMES IT staff. Results of the implementation included enhanced security posture, improved network performance with throughput capabilities, and operational efficiency through centralized management. The new infrastructure is designed to support future technologies and secure cloud adoption, positioning UMES for ongoing growth in its cybersecurity capabilities.
