This case study details the implementation of Corelight's Open Network Detection and Response (NDR) Platform at Grand Canyon Education (GCE), an organization focused on serving colleges and universities. The GCE security team aimed to replace their existing black box network security solutions with a more transparent and open-source platform to enhance network visibility and incident response capabilities. The limitations of black box solutions, including lack of access to detection logic and insufficient evidence for alerts, prompted GCE to seek a solution that would provide comprehensive threat insights. The Corelight platform integrates with existing security information and event management systems, utilizing open-source technologies like Zeek and Suricata for enhanced analytics. As a result, GCE has improved their ability to investigate and respond to threats, achieving greater confidence in their security decisions and faster adaptation to emerging threats. The case study illustrates the benefits of community-driven detection engineering in modern cybersecurity practices.
