This case study outlines the collaboration with a Hong Kong government department focused on enhancing their information security practices. The objective was to assist the department in effectively recording employee computer usage and document handling to comply with regulatory requirements. The challenges included the inadequacy of Windows built-in logs for monitoring user actions related to document handling and USB device usage. The department required a solution that could accurately track these activities. The chosen solution, Curtain LogTrace, records user actions at the application layer, providing detailed logs of activities such as copying, moving, and printing documents. LogTrace captures comprehensive information about each action, including the application used and the type of destination for USB transfers. Additionally, it supports both online and offline logging, ensuring data is preserved even when the computer is disconnected from the server. The implementation of LogTrace has resulted in clear user activity logs and has facilitated compliance with government guidelines.
