YNAB Postgres Database Performance Optimization

This case study details YNAB's experience in optimizing their Postgres database performance and managing costs through the use of Crunchy Bridge. As YNAB's user base expanded, they faced challenges with their existing database on Heroku, particularly with its 4TB limit. The team explored various sharding options and ultimately decided to maintain a vanilla Postgres setup to avoid vendor lock-in and ensure compatibility with their existing tools. YNAB conducted a thorough vendor search, evaluating options such as Amazon Aurora, Amazon RDS, and Aiven, but found that Crunchy Bridge met their requirements for consistent performance, risk management, and high-quality support. The transition allowed YNAB to increase their IOPS from 60k to 80k and utilize superuser access for enhanced database management. The case study emphasizes the importance of hands-on support and the ability to collaborate effectively with the vendor, which has significantly improved YNAB's confidence in their database operations.
