This technical report outlines the development of a quantum computing infrastructure by NTT DOCOMO, Inc. aimed at optimizing communication services through the application of quantum annealing technology. The infrastructure is set to be implemented in base stations across Japan starting July 2024, with the objective of reducing the load on these stations and easing congestion during peak call volumes. The report details the innovative algorithm developed to minimize paging signals, which are essential for determining the location of mobile devices. Demonstration experiments conducted in various regions confirmed a reduction of up to 15% in paging signals, allowing for approximately 1.2 times more devices to connect during high traffic periods. The document further explains the infrastructure's functional composition, including its solver, middleware, and application layers, as well as the flexibility and stability designed to handle diverse optimization problems. DOCOMO envisions expanding the use of this quantum computing infrastructure beyond telecommunications to enhance various services offered by the company.
