SUNY System Digital Learning Environment Case Study

This case study details the implementation of a centralized Digital Learning Environment (DLE) by the State University of New York (SUNY) System, which encompasses 64 campuses. Prior to 2022, each campus operated independently with its own learning management system (LMS), leading to inconsistencies in user experience and security protocols. The SUNY System aimed to standardize the LMS across campuses to enhance collaboration and reduce costs. After evaluating its technology landscape, SUNY selected D2L Brightspace as the unified LMS platform. The initiative resulted in a cohesive Brightspace ecosystem for 58 campuses, streamlining access and providing a consistent interface for students and faculty. The DLE initiative also included the implementation of multifactor authentication and SUNY-issued Global IDs to enhance security and user connectivity. This case study outlines the challenges faced, the collaborative governance structure established, and the successful migration of courses and integration of tools necessary for a modern digital learning environment.
