This case study details the project undertaken by Frederikshavn District Heating Utility (DHU) to enhance energy efficiency through flue gas heat recovery. The initiative involved a 14 MW gas boiler used during colder months to supply heat to the Frederikshavn community. The project, executed in collaboration with ME Production and Energy Machines, aimed to recover energy from the flue gas emitted by the existing biomass boiler system. Significant modifications were made to the economizer, and a heat pump was integrated to boost the heat recovery process. The solution successfully reduced operating costs and CO2 emissions, with estimated energy savings equivalent to the annual heat consumption of 150 households. The project also marked a significant entry for ME-Production into the land-based market, showcasing the effectiveness of advanced heat pump technology. The results highlight the importance of collaboration and innovation in achieving energy efficiency and sustainability in district heating.
