This technical report outlines the implementation of an RFID solution in Seagate Technology's disk cleaning line, developed by Stratus Automation Corp. The report details the challenges faced by Seagate in ensuring 100% reliability in their automated production process, which required precise tracking of each disc's journey through various processing steps. Previous methods, including paper tracking and barcode systems, proved inadequate due to human error and the limitations of read-only barcode technology. The RFID system utilizes Escort Memory Systems' HF-0405 integrated controllers and HMS108 tags to provide real-time data tracking and high-speed communication with the host computer. Each cassette is equipped with a unique RFID tag, allowing for accurate monitoring of its path along the conveyor system. The report highlights the successful implementation of this solution, which has achieved over 15,000 read/write cycles without failure, significantly improving operational efficiency and reducing scrap rates.
