Leveraging Medical Terminologies for Interoperability in Dedalus Solutions

This technical report evaluates the implementation of Ontoserver, a clinical terminology server based on HL7 FHIR, within Dedalus’s software ecosystem to enhance data interoperability in healthcare. The study outlines the challenges faced in integrating medical terminologies such as SNOMED CT, LOINC, and ICD into complex platforms, which are essential for standardizing clinical data. It describes the technical enhancements made, including the deployment of a sidecar FHIR resource server and workflow automation tools, which facilitated efficient terminology management. A case study on the 'Trial for Care' platform demonstrates how Ontoserver’s concept mapping and exploration features automated the standardization of bespoke codifications, resulting in improved data interoperability and reduced manual effort. The report also discusses the limitations encountered, such as managing regional standards and optimizing mappings, while underscoring the transformative potential of Ontoserver in advancing healthcare outcomes through enhanced interoperability.
