Effect of Automated Customs Clearance on Trade Efficiency

This research article assesses the effect of automated customs clearance systems on trade efficiency at the Dar es Salaam port in Tanzania. The study utilizes a qualitative data collection approach, incorporating questionnaires, interviews, and documentary reviews, with a sample size of 52 respondents. Findings indicate that the implementation of automated systems has significantly enhanced operational efficiency, with 90.4% of respondents agreeing on improved performance and 84.6% noting reduced operational costs. Additionally, 88.4% acknowledged decreased clearance times, leading to smoother cargo processing. However, the study identifies challenges such as insufficient technological infrastructure and complex trade regulations. Recommendations include investing in advanced technology, streamlining regulations, and enhancing stakeholder collaboration to further improve customs processes. The article outlines the broader context of global trends in trade automation and highlights the specific advancements and challenges faced in Tanzania, emphasizing the need for comprehensive assessments to optimize the benefits of these systems for trade facilitation.
