This case study outlines the data management and cloud strategy of Schwarz Group, a leading retailer in Germany. The company generates approximately 154 billion euros in annual sales and processes several petabytes of data daily. Faced with complex data management challenges, Schwarz Group needed to comply with strict European data protection regulations while managing over 100,000 machine learning models. To address these challenges, Schwarz Group established STACKIT, its own cloud service provider, and implemented Dremio's open data lakehouse platform. This solution enabled compliant data processing, self-service analytics, and seamless migration of operations. The implementation resulted in the successful migration of machine learning models, enhanced data democratization, and a scalable infrastructure capable of processing vast amounts of data while adhering to regulatory requirements. The case study highlights the innovative approach taken by Schwarz Group to create a replicable model for European data sovereignty, positioning STACKIT as a viable alternative to traditional cloud providers.
