This case study outlines the proactive maintenance strategies employed by a major UK operator in the energy-from-waste sector to ensure the reliability of critical electrical systems. The operator engaged EA Technology’s Partial Discharge Services team to conduct an on-line Partial Discharge (PD) survey aimed at detecting early-stage faults and asset degradation. The survey revealed partial discharge activity and advanced insulation damage, specifically identifying 'treeing' on a bus-bar insulator. Immediate reporting of these issues enabled the operator to take rapid intervention measures and implement targeted maintenance recommendations, thereby minimizing the risk of future in-service failures. The proactive approach not only strengthened the reliability and efficiency of the operator's electrical assets but also enhanced risk management and protected their investment against potential catastrophic failures. This case study emphasizes the importance of early detection and proactive maintenance in safeguarding energy-from-waste facilities and ensuring their operational safety.
