This case study details the implementation of Nalco Water's RESOLV Contaminant Removal Program at a North American refinery processing Doba crude. The refinery faced challenges due to high calcium and iron levels, which negatively impacted FCC catalysts, conversion rates, and product yields. The study outlines the historical issues with the previous treatment approach using glycolic acid, which resulted in low calcium removal rates and high fouling rates. The RESOLV program was designed to enhance calcium removal efficiency and reduce operational costs. Key improvements included increased calcium removal rates from 72% to 86%, a reduction in fresh catalyst rates, and significant annual savings exceeding $15 million. The program also achieved stable desalting performance and reduced organic acid carryover. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of Nalco's approach in improving refinery operations and cost efficiency while maintaining compliance with operational standards.
