This case study details the implementation of Nalco Water's Pulp Wash Intelligence at an integrated kraft mill in North America, aimed at enhancing the brown stock washing operations. The objective was to automate the monitoring of incoming pulp cleanliness, thereby improving production efficiency. The system utilizes a combination of sensors, software, and control algorithms to monitor the dirtiness of pulp and adjust wash aid and shower water in real-time. The technology provides total load measurements, enabling better control of washing stages. The results of the implementation included a significant reduction in energy consumption, with annual savings of 90,000 MMBTUs and a total value delivered of $450,000. The study highlights the effectiveness of the solution in increasing the efficiency of evaporator operations and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 5,100 tons annually.
