This technical report presents the results of a performance testing study comparing self-hosted databases, specifically EnterpriseDB (EDB) and MySQL, focusing on NoSQL capabilities. The objective of the study is to evaluate the performance, cost differences, and potential advantages of using EDB over MySQL for organizations considering self-hosted NoSQL solutions. The report outlines the testing methodology, which involved using Amazon Web Services EC2 instances and the PG NoSQL Benchmark to assess bulk load times, INSERT times, and average SELECT query times across varying data volumes. Results indicate that EDB outperformed MySQL in all tested scenarios, with EDB being significantly faster in bulk loading, row-by-row INSERTs, and SELECT queries. The findings suggest that EDB provides superior NoSQL performance, especially as data volumes increase, making it a compelling choice for enterprises seeking efficient and cost-effective database solutions. The report concludes with insights into the implications of these performance differences for organizational database strategies.
