This technical report discusses the use of AEGIS® Shaft Grounding Rings in wind turbines to mitigate electrical damage caused by inverter-induced voltage. Wind turbines convert wind energy into electrical energy, but the process can lead to harmful voltage discharges through generator and gearbox bearings, resulting in cumulative damage known as fluting or tiger-striping. The report outlines how AEGIS® Shaft Grounding Rings provide a low-impedance path for high-frequency currents, protecting components from electrical bearing damage. Measurements conducted on a 140 m high wind turbine demonstrated that without shaft grounding, high-frequency voltage reached dangerous levels. After installing the AEGIS® PRO Ring segments, the shaft voltage was reduced to below one volt, ensuring safe operation. The report emphasizes the durability and effectiveness of AEGIS® grounding systems compared to traditional methods, highlighting their importance in maintaining the reliability of wind power generation.
