General Practice Placements for Student Nurses

This article is a research report that discusses a study conducted by Bournemouth University on student nurse placements in general practice settings. The study addresses the shortage of general practice nurses (GPNs) and the need for increased placement opportunities to enhance the nursing workforce. It outlines the historical context of placements, highlighting the reluctance of GP partners to support such initiatives due to concerns over time, financial support, and training for mentors. The findings indicate that placements in general practice significantly increase students' interest in pursuing careers as GPNs. Evaluations from students reveal a high level of support and a positive learning environment, with students feeling valued and respected. However, some limitations in learning opportunities were noted, particularly regarding medication administration and the extent of responsibilities allowed.
