Tackling Pseudomonas Infections with a Water Safety Initiative

This article is a case study detailing a nurse-led initiative at The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust aimed at addressing the rise of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in the haemato-oncology unit. Following an outbreak of multi-drug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the nursing team recognized the need for enhanced water safety practices to protect vulnerable patients. The initiative involved the development of a comprehensive water-safety training package for all staff, including nursing, pharmacy, medical, and non-clinical personnel. Additionally, a patient-focused water-safety leaflet was created to inform patients and visitors. The success of this initiative is evidenced by a significant reduction in infections, with no new cases of multi-drug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa reported since October 2021. Monthly assurance audits and ongoing staff training have been implemented to maintain focus on water safety, ensuring it remains a priority in patient care. This initiative serves as a model for other healthcare units aiming to improve infection prevention and control measures.
