This case study details the implementation of wireless technology by Plains Exploration & Production Company (PXP) to enhance oilfield operations, specifically focusing on optimizing steam injection in oil production. The challenge faced by PXP involved high costs associated with thermal energy used in oil extraction, which often accounted for a significant portion of production expenses. Traditional manual monitoring methods proved ineffective, leading to issues such as over-injection and under-injection of steam, resulting in costly cut liners and lost production. The solution involved deploying Emerson's wireless technology, which provided real-time data on steam injection rates and improved monitoring capabilities across 120 wells. The results included increased oil production, optimized steam-to-oil ratios, reduced costs associated with cut liners, and enhanced operator productivity. The project demonstrated a quick return on investment, reinforcing PXP's commitment to utilizing advanced technology for improved operational efficiency and decision-making.
