This technical report details the upgrade of programmable logic control technology on a large LPG tanker operated by a prominent shipping company. The upgrade was necessitated by a constrained timeframe of three weeks during a dry dock period, which required rapid integration of the new PACSystems RX3i CPE400 modular programmable automation controller. The report outlines the challenges faced, including the need for a cost-effective migration solution that retained existing I/O and infrastructure while enhancing performance, reliability, scalability, remote monitoring, and cybersecurity. The PACSystems controller, which has DNV-GL marine approvals, provided a straightforward migration path with minimal modifications needed. Additionally, the built-in security protocols and cybersecurity tools were crucial for protecting the system against unauthorized access. The successful implementation ensured that the vessel met seaworthiness standards without incurring costly delays during the dry dock period.
