This case study details the collaboration between Simartis and Entrust to develop a secure architecture for Embedded SIM cards (eSIMs) within the Virtual Subscription Management (VSM) platform. Simartis aimed to create a system that allows for remote over-the-air provisioning and management while meeting the security requirements of the GSMA Security Accreditation Scheme (SAS) audit. Entrust provided hardware security modules (HSMs) to facilitate secure management of encryption keys and certificates. The implementation process included support from Entrust engineers to ensure compliance and effective integration. The VSM platform developed by Simartis enables mobile operators to offer global connectivity services, manage eSIM subscriptions securely, and enhance customer experiences. Notably, Simartis successfully completed the GSMA RSP dry audit on the first attempt and is preparing for the wet audit. The case study illustrates the technical challenges faced, including compliance with regional regulations and the need for a hardware-based HSM as the root of trust for secure communications.
