This report examines the risks and opportunities associated with illegal artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) in northern Côte d’Ivoire. Funded by USAID through the Resilience for Peace Project, the study aims to inform policymakers about the human rights and security challenges posed by illegal ASGM activities. Key findings indicate that illegal ASGM production in Côte d’Ivoire ranges between 30 to 40 tons annually, resulting in significant untaxed revenue losses estimated at $1.6 billion. The report details the local organization of illegal ASGM sites, highlighting the involvement of community stakeholders and the complexities of the gold supply chain, which often leads to smuggling operations. Additionally, the regulatory environment is described as restrictive, pushing miners into the informal economy and fostering frustration with state authorities. While no direct links between violent extremism and high-production ASGM sites were found, the report identifies various risk factors that could contribute to security concerns in the region.
