This case study focuses on the installation of the Magnetic Mill Liner (MML) at Nexa Resources S.A. in the Central Andes of Peru. The MML, invented and patented in 1989, has been retrofitted in over 600 mills globally. It consists of a permanent magnet embedded in a high chromium alloy molding, designed to provide a protective layer by accumulating ball chips and ferromagnetic materials. The installation process is highlighted as simple and safe, taking significantly less time compared to conventional liners. The MML installation enhances safety for maintenance crews, reduces costs, and eliminates the need for ongoing maintenance. The MML reportedly lasts two to three times longer than traditional rubber or metallic liners, resulting in substantial cost savings and improved grinding efficiency. The study concludes that the MML installation not only reduces downtime but also contributes to a safer work environment and lower carbon footprint, making it a viable option for various mining applications.
