This case study details the implementation of an integrated Electronic Health Record (EHR) and practice management system at a District Health Department in North Carolina. The department, which serves three counties and has approximately 45 users, transitioned from a legacy billing system and paper-based medical records to a more efficient electronic system. The previous system was cumbersome, lacked integration, and created operational inefficiencies. The chosen solution, expEDIum & Patagonia, was selected for its robust features and competitive pricing. The implementation process began in August 2012, starting with one county and expanding to others. The new system improved workflow, reduced the need for repetitive data entry, and enhanced billing efficiency, resulting in faster reimbursements. The biller now processes over 1300 claims monthly with a significantly reduced denial rate. The case study illustrates the challenges and successes of moving from a paper-based to an electronic office, highlighting the importance of effective software solutions in public health.
