UCHealth Charity Care Automation Case Study

This case study details UCHealth's initiative to enhance its charity care process through automation. Following the release of charity care data by the state of Colorado, UCHealth identified a need to improve its financial assistance screening. The organization implemented Experian's Patient Financial Clearance solution in early 2023, which allowed for a more comprehensive analysis of patients' financial situations. By considering factors such as the Federal Poverty Level ratio and patients' past payment histories, UCHealth was able to calculate a Healthcare Financial Risk Score. This automation has significantly expedited the financial assistance determination process, enabling UCHealth to approve over 1700 cases and write off $26 million in charity care in 2023. The streamlined process has reduced the workload on staff and improved patient experience by facilitating easier access to financial assistance. Additionally, the integration with Epic® has enhanced operational efficiency by minimizing the need for multiple software systems.
