This technical report presents the FP&A Operating Model Design Framework, aimed at addressing the structural challenges faced by Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) teams. The document outlines the necessity for organizations to adapt their FP&A operating models to better align with contemporary business demands, particularly in the context of increasing reliance on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation. It identifies five structural weaknesses in traditional FP&A models, including outdated organizational structures and planning cycles that fail to keep pace with rapid changes. The report emphasizes the importance of creating a tailored operating model that fits an organization's specific context, governance culture, and readiness. It introduces a nine-step process for implementing the framework, which can be executed incrementally rather than through extensive projects. The findings are based on extensive research, including surveys and discussions with finance leaders, highlighting the need for FP&A to generate 'Decision Alpha'—the additional value derived from informed decision-making. This report serves as a guide for CFOs and finance leaders in transforming their FP&A functions to enhance decision-making capabilities.
