This case study details the initiative undertaken by the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences at the University of Tokyo to enhance its IT infrastructure, specifically focusing on the transition to a new unified threat management (UTM) system. Established in 1998, the graduate school promotes interdisciplinary studies and regularly assesses its IT capabilities to optimize performance. With a user base of approximately 2,160 individuals, the institution sought a UTM solution that would meet its operational requirements while minimizing disruption to its existing network. After evaluating various options, the school selected SonicWall's UTM devices, which provided the necessary performance and reliability. The implementation included a redundant setup to ensure high availability, resulting in no operational disruptions during the transition. The support from SonicWall's Japanese-speaking team facilitated effective communication and rapid resolution of technical issues. Additionally, the absence of extra licensing costs for the HA standby unit contributed to significant cost savings for the institution.
