UX Guidelines for Passkey Creation and Sign-ins

This guide outlines the UX guidelines developed by the FIDO Alliance UX Working Group for the creation and sign-in processes involving passkeys. The guidelines are based on UX research conducted with 26 participants across the U.S., who interacted with a Figma prototype and a live demo website. The document details ten UX principles aimed at enhancing user experience when prompting users to create passkeys, including strategies for associating passkeys with familiar concepts and ensuring accessibility. Additionally, it presents three content principles that guide the design and language used in passkey-related content. The guidelines also include detailed recommendations for four common user journeys: account creation with a passkey, account recovery, managing passkeys in account settings, and signing in with a passkey. The document serves as a comprehensive resource for implementing effective passkey UX strategies, ensuring users understand and trust the new authentication method.
