This case study outlines the challenges faced by a large biopharmaceutical company regarding its direct material supply chain operations due to increased campaign volume. Management took measures to mitigate risks associated with potential production delays by allocating additional full-time equivalent resources and investing in raw material inventory. Thermo Fisher Scientific conducted a Gemba Walk to analyze the supply chain process and identified multiple operational inefficiencies, including poor delivery performance and excessive expenditures. The company proposed to consolidate production sourcing, which involved improving supplier management, order management, and logistics management. Additionally, the quality management system was enhanced to address issues related to supplier errors and maintain compliance with relevant standards. As a result of these efforts, the company reported significant savings in FTE costs and working capital, while also reducing the risk of production delays. Collaborating with Thermo Fisher allowed for better resource allocation and improved operational efficiencies to meet growing manufacturing demands.
