This document is the sixth annual Freelance Economic Impact Report released by Fiverr, which identifies and profiles the largest markets in the United States for freelance workers. The report reveals that U.S. independent professionals earned an estimated $286 billion in 2022, marking a nearly 10% increase from 2021. It highlights that 75% of freelancers are more hopeful than fearful regarding the impact of AI on their jobs. The study, conducted in partnership with Rockbridge Associates and the Freelancers Union, analyzes data from the U.S. Census Bureau to assess the size and revenues of U.S.-based freelancers. The report indicates that independent professionals represent 4.1% of the U.S. labor force and contribute 1.1% to the total U.S. GDP. It also discusses trends among independent workers, including their preferences for flexibility and autonomy, and the growing significance of professional services within the freelance economy. Additionally, it notes that women freelancers are increasingly drawn to freelance work for its advantages over traditional employment.
