eXtreme Design for Ontological Engineering in Digital Humanities

This research article presents the application of eXtreme Design (XD) and Ontology Design Patterns (ODPs) in the framework of Digital Humanities (DH), utilizing a knowledge graph based on Giorgio Vasari's work, 'Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects'. The text discusses the increasing relevance of knowledge graphs and ontologies for integrating diverse datasets in DH, emphasizing the necessity of adhering to principles such as Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR). The project aims to develop a knowledge graph, named Viewsari, which will facilitate exploration and querying of artist information and their relationships. It documents the methodologies employed in the design process and iterations while also addressing the historical significance of Vasari's text for art historical research. The article details the challenges and benefits of using XD in ontological engineering, reinforcing its potential role in advancing the understanding and representation of complex interrelations in the DH domain.
