Eighteenth Century Collections Online Research Report

This report investigates academic research publications that cite documents in Gale’s Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO) from 2008 to September 2024. It summarizes the main subject areas that have cited ECCO documents, focusing on the types of citing academic works, frequently citing journals, and institutions. The analysis is based on 7,312 citations from 4,440 different documents in Scopus, specifically targeting rare ECCO documents with fewer than 10 citations. The report outlines the dominance of the Arts and Humanities in citing ECCO, accounting for 61.6% of all citing works, with Cultural Studies being a significant contributor. It also discusses the reasons for citing ECCO documents, highlighting their role as sources of evidence for various academic inquiries across multiple fields, including culture, economics, and social sciences. The findings illustrate the evolving accessibility of eighteenth-century texts and their impact on contemporary academic research.
