This case study outlines the successful upgrade of the Alterrex excitation systems at Detroit Edison’s Monroe Power Plant, one of the largest coal-fired plants in the United States. The project was initiated due to a scheduled outage, which presented a unique opportunity to refurbish the excitation systems within a tight timeframe of 22 calendar days. The GE Vernova Controls team committed to this accelerated schedule and replaced the existing diode bridge assemblies with redesigned Alterrex diode rectifier bridges. Key features of the new systems included enhanced cooling technology, a new diagnostic interface panel for thermal monitoring, and improved alarm annunciation. The project was completed ahead of schedule, demonstrating the effectiveness of collaboration and responsiveness to customer feedback. The upgrades not only improved performance but also ensured that the project was executed smoothly and on time, showcasing GE Vernova's commitment to continuous improvement and customer satisfaction.
