Modernization of Sasol's Secunda Power Plant

This technical report details the modernization project of Sasol's Secunda power plant in Mpumalanga, South Africa, completed by GE Vernova. The project aimed to enhance operational efficiency and significantly reduce NOx emissions. Key upgrades included the installation of a new DLN1+ combustor and Fuel Gas Module skid, which improved the efficiency of the existing gas turbines. The report outlines the environmental benefits, including a reduction of NOx emissions to below 25 ppm and a decrease of approximately 10,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions per turbine annually. Additionally, the modernization is expected to save water consumption equivalent to about 64 Olympic pools per turbine each year and extend maintenance intervals, thereby reducing operational costs. The project serves as a model for future power plant upgrades across Africa, addressing the continent's growing energy demands while promoting sustainable practices.
