This case study details the installation of Multilin 869 motor protection relays at a global forest company based in the United States. The company, which manages extensive land resources and emphasizes sustainability, aimed to enhance its motor maintenance approach to reduce costly downtimes. The installation of the Multilin 869 relays, which incorporate GE Vernova’s Electrical Signature Analysis (ESA) technology, was contracted to improve preventative maintenance. The ESA feature provides advanced diagnostics for electrical, thermal, and mechanical monitoring, enabling proactive identification of potential motor failures. Following the installation, the relay successfully detected an alarm related to a bearing issue, prompting timely maintenance that confirmed the defect through ultrasound testing. The positive outcome of this project has led the company to standardize the use of Multilin 869 relays with ESA for their critical motors in future installations.
