This technical report presents a comprehensive analysis of the electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure necessary to meet the UK's future charging demands as the country transitions to electrified vehicles. The report outlines the critical role of public rapid charging stations, estimating that approximately 65 to 75% of total EV charging demand can be satisfied through this method. It emphasizes the importance of deploying between 112,000 to 130,000 rapid chargers to ensure commercial viability and sustainability while minimizing unnecessary infrastructure. The research challenges the assumption that home charging will cover most charging needs, highlighting the potential for underutilized assets and grid capacity issues. The paper details three charging use cases: home charging at 3.6kW, destination charging at 25kW, and rapid hub charging at 150kW, and discusses the optimal strategies for their implementation. The methodology includes an analysis of UK travel demand and vehicle types, providing a data-driven foundation for the proposed infrastructure rollout.
