This case study details the implementation of the National Emergency Warning System (NEWS) in Australia, developed in response to the catastrophic bushfires of February 2009. Following the public outcry regarding insufficient warnings during the crisis, the Australian government recognized the need for a more effective public warning system. The solution involved creating a location-based SMS technology that could deliver emergency alerts to over 95% of the population in affected areas without requiring prior opt-in from users. The Genasys Protect NEWS system utilizes geo-location capabilities to send targeted alerts to mobile phones in crisis-affected regions, ensuring timely communication of life-saving information. The system integrates various data sources, including dynamic maps and weather forecasts, to enhance its effectiveness. Since its launch, Genasys has successfully delivered over 180 million SMS notifications, demonstrating a high successful delivery rate and rapid alert dissemination. This initiative aims to improve public safety and emergency management across Australia.
