This case study details the implementation of a backup power solution at the Illinois Army National Guard’s North Riverside Readiness Center. The document outlines the challenge of ensuring energy resilience while managing high utility demand charges. A natural gas-powered 150 kW generator with a 1200-amp Automatic Transfer Switch was installed as part of a demand-side management generator configuration. The installation process revealed critical commissioning issues that required collaboration with facility management to ensure uninterrupted power supply to essential systems. The results included a 23.1% reduction in peak electric demand, significant year-round energy cost savings, and enhanced energy resilience during peak occupancy. The natural gas generator system demonstrated lower emissions and compliance with environmental regulations, showcasing a commitment to sustainability. Overall, the project exemplifies effective planning and collaboration in addressing energy challenges, providing a model for other organizations seeking to improve their backup power systems.
