This document is a case study detailing the implementation of RFID-based self-checkout technology at the Shoprite Group, Africa's largest retailer. The Shoprite Group is upgrading its point-of-sale (POS) software architecture to GK OmniPOS to support future innovations and meet fiscalization needs across several Southern African countries. In September 2022, the Group aimed to launch a new apparel banner, UNIQ, within six months, featuring RFID-based self-checkouts. The successful launch included the integration of the existing loyalty platform with GK OmniPOS. The implementation was completed in record time, with the first RFID self-checkout in Africa operational without issues. The document outlines the challenges faced, the solutions provided by GK, and the rapid integration into the Shoprite Group's existing systems. By June 2023, multiple UNIQ stores were operational, with plans for further expansion. The case study emphasizes the collaborative efforts between Shoprite and GK to achieve the project goals effectively.
