This technical report discusses the advancements in AI-RAN (Artificial Intelligence Radio Access Network) performance through the application of NVIDIA GPU acceleration. It outlines the challenges faced by traditional RAN architectures due to the exponential growth of mobile data traffic and the complexities of 5G and 6G deployments. The report details the concept of AI-RAN, emphasizing its potential to enhance spectrum efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and enable real-time performance adaptations. It presents two proofs of concept that evaluate the performance and scalability of a 5G Open RAN stack when ported from CPU-based systems to a hybrid CPU and GPU configuration. The findings indicate significant improvements in processing time and energy efficiency, particularly in high-traffic environments. The report concludes by highlighting the strategic importance of AI-RAN in shaping future telecommunications networks and the role of GPU acceleration in achieving these advancements.
