Current State of Collaborative Design in AEC Industry

This research report investigates the state of collaborative design within the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry, based on a survey of 393 professionals involved in the built environment. The study focuses on collaboration approaches, the adoption of advanced design tools, and their impact on project success and profitability. Key findings indicate that while architects recognize the importance of collaboration across disciplines to manage increased design complexity, traditional methods such as email and hard-copy documents remain prevalent, leading to inefficiencies. The report highlights that only 22% of respondents fully adopt multidisciplinary design, despite its recognized benefits, including improved efficiency and reduced errors. Challenges such as poor communication and increased project complexity are identified as significant barriers to achieving project objectives. The report also notes regional variations in priorities and challenges faced by companies in different geographies, particularly regarding sustainability and design complexity. Overall, the findings underscore the need for improved collaboration and integration in the AEC industry.
