This report assesses the economic value of implementing a publicly funded vaccination program for adults aged 65 and older in New Zealand. It outlines how such a program could significantly reduce the burden on the healthcare system by preventing preventable illnesses like shingles, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The analysis indicates that over four years, the program could prevent approximately 8,253 hospitalizations, 137,878 GP visits, and 2,468 emergency department presentations. Additionally, the report highlights the broader economic benefits, estimating a return on investment (ROI) of between 1.93 and 2.17 for every dollar spent on vaccination. This investment not only enhances public health but also allows older adults to remain active in the workforce and community, thereby contributing positively to the economy. The findings suggest that prioritizing adult vaccinations could lead to substantial healthcare savings and improved quality of life for older adults, ultimately benefiting the entire healthcare system and society.
